AmaMagna vs. Smaller AmaWaterways Ships: My Honest Take After Sailing Both

If you’ve started looking into AmaWaterways, chances are you’ve come across the AmaMagna. It’s the largest ship in their fleet. It looks impressive. And naturally, it raises a question I hear often: Is the AmaMagna actually better than the smaller ships…or just different?

I recently had the opportunity to sail on both the AmaMagna and a smaller ship, the AmaLea, just three weeks apart on the Danube River. And I’ve also spent time on other AmaWaterways ships like AmaSerena, AmaBella, AmaMora, and AmaSonata.

So this isn’t just a surface comparison. It’s a lived one. And if you’re trying to decide whether the AmaMagna is worth it, or whether a smaller ship might actually fit you better, I hope this will help your decision making.

The Quick Answer (Before We Go Deeper)

First off, both are excellent. This is not a “good vs. bad” decision. It’s a travel style decision.

  • The AmaMagna feels more like a small floating hotel with options

  • The smaller ships feel more like a floating boutique experience

Neither is better. But chances are one might feel more like you.

What It Feels Like Onboard AmaMagna

The moment you step onto the AmaMagna, you notice the difference if familiar with smaller river ships.

It’s wider. More open. There’s more space to spread out. It carries around 190–200 guests at maximum capacity, which is 50-60 more people than what you’ll find on most AmaWaterways ships.

What stands out right away:

  • Pickleball court on the top deck

  • Full pool and a hot tub

  • Multiple dining venues

  • A theater-style lounge with a large screen

  • More public space overall

During my sailing, we were onboard during the Winter Olympics, and the theater became this shared gathering space to watch events together with passengers from around the world . It was genuinely fun, and something you just don’t get on smaller ships.

They also had onboard hosts leading activities during the day. Things like trivia, karaoke, and even learning how to solve a Rubik’s Cube. In general, there is more going on than a normal AmaWaterways cruise.

What I personally loved:

The amenities matter more than you think, especially on days when you’re spending time onboard. The extra space is noticeable. Your room is larger. The ship feels less compact. And if you’re someone who likes having options, this ship gives you that.

What To Consider About AmaMagna

This is where the decision becomes more personal. Because for me, the biggest difference wasn’t the size. It was the mental experience of being onboard.

It’s more decision-based

On AmaMagna, you’re making more choices:

  • Where to eat

  • When to reserve

  • What activities to join

That’s not a bad thing. But it does change the feel of the trip. On a river cruise, some travelers love having everything feel simple and intuitive. Others enjoy having options.

It feels bigger

Even on a sailing that wasn’t full, you can tell it’s built for more people. You won’t necessarily know everyone onboard and you won’t run into the same people quite as naturally as you might on a smaller ship.

Water level considerations

This is more practical, but worth knowing. Because of its size, the AmaMagna can be more impacted by water levels, especially in places like Budapest. It doesn’t happen often. But when it does, larger ships tend to be affected more than smaller ones.

What It Feels Like Onboard Smaller Ships

Three weeks after sailing on the AmaMagna, I spent a week on the AmaLea. The ship carries around 160 guests at maximum capacity, which is much more typical for a river cruise. And the difference in feeling is immediate.

Dining is simpler:

  • Main dining room

  • Chef’s Table

  • Light options in the lounge

That’s it. And honestly, that simplicity is part of the appeal.

What I Love About The Smaller Ship Experience

I was on the AmaLea with a multi-generational group of 20 people, ages 7 to 90, across four generations. And this is where the smaller ship really stood out.

It felt personal in a way that’s hard to describe until you experience it

  • You get to know the crew

  • They get to know you

  • You recognize other guests quickly

There’s a rhythm to it that just feels easy.

There’s less to think about

You’re not managing reservations or weighing options. You just show up, and it works. That might sound small, but it changes how the trip feels day to day.

Moments that stayed with us

Some of our favorite memories weren’t big excursions. They were the in-between moments. Running into the same crew members each day. Sitting together as a group in the lounge. Feeling like the ship itself was part of the experience, not just where we slept. With a group that size, the intimacy of the ship made it feel like we were all sharing something together, not just traveling alongside each other.

What You Won’t Find On Smaller Ships

To be clear, you are giving some things up.

  • No pickleball court

  • No theater

  • No hot tub (just a heated pool)...the pool is usable year-round, but it’s not the same as having a true hot tub

If those amenities matter to you, you’ll feel that difference.

Cabin Comparison (What Actually Matters)

This is worth calling out because it can influence decisions more than expected. On AmaMagna, I had a balcony stateroom. On AmaLea, I had a fixed window stateroom.

Yes, the AmaMagna room was larger. And yes, the balcony was nice. But because my travel style is more active and excursion-focused, I didn’t use the balcony nearly as much as I thought I would. The fixed window on AmaLea felt completely sufficient for how I actually travel.

What I did notice more was the extra square footage on AmaMagna. So if space matters to you, that’s real. But if your days are spent off the ship exploring, the room itself may matter less than you expect.

AmaMagna vs. Smaller AmaWaterways Ships: What Should You Pick?

Choose AmaMagna if:

  • You want more space and onboard amenities

  • You enjoy having options throughout the day

  • You’re coming from ocean cruising and want something familiar

  • You value larger staterooms

Choose a smaller ship if:

  • You want a more intimate, personal experience

  • You prefer simplicity over choices

  • You value connection with the same staff and fellow travelers

My Honest Recommendation

For me personally, I prefer the smaller ships. They feel more aligned with what I want a river cruise to be. More personal. More relaxed. More connected.

That said, the AmaMagna is a fantastic ship. And for the right traveler, it’s absolutely the better choice. I really did love the AmaMagna and will look forward to the next opportunity I get to sail on this beautiful ship.

The Part Most People Get Wrong

This decision isn’t about which ship is “better.” It’s about how you like to travel when you’re not thinking about it. Do you naturally seek out options, variety, and activity? Or do you settle into a rhythm and enjoy when things feel easy? That answer will tell you more than any list of features ever could.

Book with a Trusted AmaWaterways Travel Agent

My service is completely complimentary to you because the advisor commission is already built into every AmaWaterways fare. Whether you book directly with the cruise line or work with me, the base price is the same. The difference is that an experienced advisor helps ensure promotions, cabin availability, and timing advantages are applied correctly before anything is locked in.

I book AmaWaterways sailings every week and work closely with the company on an ongoing basis. That means I have direct access to the teams handling inventory, promotions, and exceptions, which can make a meaningful difference when it comes to securing the best cabins, resolving questions quickly, or navigating changes smoothly.

River cruise companies strongly prefer guests work with knowledgeable advisors. It reduces pressure on their call centers and, more importantly, helps travelers choose the right ship, itinerary, and stateroom the first time, before deposits are down and changes become complicated. Even if you do not choose to work with me, I encourage working with an advisor who truly understands river cruising and how these itineraries function in practice.

AmaWaterways designs its pricing, policies, and guest experience with advisors in mind because they know travelers are more confident, better informed, and ultimately happier when someone experienced is walking alongside them throughout the planning process.
